Your sins shall surely find you out!

You can always tell there is growth in your recovery when those things that used to send you in a tailspin can now make you laugh. My husband and I were meeting at his dad’s after work but would be taking separate vehicles. Fortunately for me, he ended up running an errand right by my work so I asked him if I could just ride with him. Of course, this wasn’t as fortunate for him as he had already stopped by the gas station to purchase an after work beverage. Even though he thought these frequent behaviors were hidden to me, God usually revealed to me what I needed to see, right when I needed to see it.

As he pulled up to my work and I went to the passengers side to jump in his truck, I noticed he was laughing pretty intensely. I opened the door and the smell about knocked me over. His face was wet, the interior of his truck was wet, and my seat was soaking wet. Because there was no hiding this one, he knew an explanation was in order. He told me that when I had called him he had just walked out of the gas station. He knew he needed to hide his purchase from me so as he looked around his vehicle, he thought the best place would be in the seat pocket behind me. As he started driving he heard a crazy hissing sound and pretty quickly realized the sound was coming from the seat pocket. He reached behind the seat into his well thought out hiding place and pulls out at exploding can. The beverage continues to spew all over him, the interior of the car, and even the windshield. As he finishes his story with drips still running off the end of his nose I couldn’t help but begin to smile. I looked at him as we both were laughing and said “Your sins shall surely find you out”.

The old me would have lectured, ridiculed, and probably even yelled. But I am learning that no one feels worse than the addict when they detour off their recovery plan. Adding guilt and shame, only widens the gorge that already exists between us. So today I was able to keep my mouth shut, hopefully tomorrow I can do the same. 👏🏻🤐
